Victorian Diamond Cameo Chalcedony Achilles Stick Pin
Victorian stick pin depicting Achilles in a cameo on chalcedony. Around the edge are 10 rose cut diamonds in closed back settings and mounted in 9ct gold (tested). There is a solid rose gold pin fixed to the back of the cameo at the top. This pin has been finely made and is of excellent craftsmanship. Weight 6.6gms. Achilles is here in full warrior mode; he was a Greek hero in the Iliad in the Trojan Wars and killed by Paris who shot him in the heel, it being the only vulnerable part of him. Achilles’ mother Thetis, dipped him in the river Styx as a baby, holding by one of his heels, this making him invulnerable in all of his body except for his heel. This piece is in excellent vintage condition and has some patina on the gold. C.1880.
