Victorian Flat Cut Garnet Gold Mourning Brooch

From The Alice Collection – antique mid Victorian flat cut garnet and gold mourning brooch;  this is one of Alice’s most spectacular brooches and certainly one of her largest.  It measures 4.5cm x 4cm (1 3/4″ x 1 1/2″) and is set with 5 deep red oval flat cut garnets amid gold foliage and an extensively decorative border.  To the reverse there is a glass topped compartment containing very finely woven dark brown hair and a hook and pin closure Weight: 17.6gm.  The brooch is in very good condition and has been clearly loved and looked after.  Tested as 9ct gold.  C.1850 – 1870.  Ref: H066-61
