Victorian Gold Enamel Mourning Brooch

Antique mid Victorian era mourning brooch in 15ct gold and enamel;  this is a fine example of Victorian craftsmanship and is formed of a round brooch with pendant loop decorated in the Greek Key design in black enamel.  In the centre there is a glass covered compartment with finely woven brown hair inside.  To the reverse there is a metal pin and gold hook closure and a glass covered compartment, currently empty.    The brooch is inscribed William Kirby died aged 55 20 October 1867.  William was born on 17 March 1812 in Skirpenbeck, Yorkshire to Nathaniel and Hannah Kirby.  He married Ann Potter on 12 June 1834 and lived in Driffield, Yorkshire.  He had 3 daughters and a son – Maria, Mary Ann, Elizabeth and William.  We believe Ann may have died and William re-married Mary.  By the time of the 1861 census there were additional members of his household which may have been more children or Ann’s from a previous marriage, or household staff, but 11 people were registered as living at his house.  His death was registered at Pocklington, Yorkshire.  Weight: 12.50gm; measurements: 3cm x 3cm x 1cm/1.25″ x 1.25″ x 0.50″.  Tested as 15ct gold.  This beautiful brooch, dedicated to a departed husband and father is in very good vintage condition with normal wear and tear.  C.1865 -1870.  Ref: H066-37.
